Pau d'Arco (tabebuia impertiginosa)
Botanical name: tabebuia impertiginosa
Part of the plant: inner bark
Origin: Brazil
Shape: Powdered inner bark
Pau d'Arco also called Lapacho, can treat skin infections thanks to its antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory actions. Pau d'Arco can help relieve symptoms of skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and acne problems.
Traditionally, in South America, pau d'arco is prepared in the form of a decoction because an infusion is not sufficient to extract the active ingredients, by boiling, for 8 to 10 minutes, from 15 g to 20 g of internal bark powder in 500 ml of water. Filter and apply with a cotton pad soaked in the infected area.
You can also use it in combination with clay in the form of a mask.
- Kaolin clay: Soft clay of a beautiful purity which has antibacterial, healing and decongestant powers. Ideal for mature, sensitive and blotchy skin.
- Rhassoul Clay: Clay with purifying, astringent and cleansing properties, ideal for acne, reactive and oily skin.
Mix 10gr of Pau d'Arco powder for 100gr of clay of your choice, add mineral or spring water to make a thick paste then apply to the skin. Leave on for about 10 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water. Do not completely dry the clay, if necessary spray water to rehydrate the mask.
IMPORTANT: Always do an allergy or intolerance test on a small part of the skin before regular use.
For all medicinal uses, please refer to a specialist.
